Top 3 causes of winter car accidents

Fall is in full swing, and winter is just around the corner. It is already starting to rain here in the Plymouth area, and pretty soon it will be snow. These harsh weather conditions that may be all too familiar for you can cause serious dangers on the road. Unskilled, negligent or tourist drivers may not know how to handle these conditions and crash into you

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, poor visibility and slippery roads cause car accidents. But why exactly does this happen? Below is a look at how adverse weather impacts drivers.

1. Reduced visibility

All types of precipitation, including rain, sleet and heavy snowstorms, can all make it difficult for drivers to see. This precipitation can directly block objects, pedestrians and other vehicles. It can also create fog. When snow builds up on the side of the road, it can be difficult for drivers to notice pedestrians. Low visibility is a core contributor to winter car accidents.

2. Slippery roads

As temperatures continue to drop, pavement becomes a dangerous and slippery mess. Icy and even wet roads reduce the ability of tires to gain traction. These conditions can cause cars to slide through intersections and cause pileups. If a driver does not leave enough room behind you and tries to brake hard on an icy road, he or she may rear-end you.

3. Poor car condition

Many drivers do not get their cars checked by a mechanic as winter comes near. Cars that are in bad shape can increase the risk of a winter collision. Worn out defroster fans, headlights and windshield wipers reduce visibility while balding tires make for poor traction.

You may be the most careful driver out there, but you cannot control the weather or the behavior of other motorists. Adverse winter weather could result in someone crashing into you. Be watchful on the roads out there.
