Getting hit by a car on your bike can cause catastrophic injuries and even death. Keep the following tips in mind to be prepared if you ever get into a crash.
1. Protect your head
Head injuries, including traumatic brain injuries and concussions, can lead to severe complications and death. The first thing you should do to prevent this type of injury is to wear a bicycle helmet that fits properly. If you get in a crash and afterwards experience a headache or loss of consciousness, or you crack your helmet, you should get medical help immediately.
2. Make your personal information accessible
After a collision, you may lose consciousness and not be able to communicate to emergency medical technicians. EMTs need to know about your medications, allergies and other important details to treat you effectively. Most smartphones have medical information features for this very purpose. Otherwise, you might want to carry dog tags with any pertinent health information. This can save your life.
3. Text someone or leave a note
If you ride all the time, you might not think of informing a loved one. After all, it is just a normal ride. But you never know what might happen, especially if you are riding alone or in a remote area. It is always safer to let a family member, significant other or close friend know about your ride and where you are going.
By following these three steps, you can reduce your risk of injuries and death in a bicycle accident.
