6 risks of accidents during the spring and summer months

There’s probably no better season than spring. Flowers start to bloom, fresh vegetables sprout up in your garden and you can finally get back outside doing what you love. With this extra activity, the risk of accidents increases. Here are six reasons you have to be even more careful in the spring when you are out on the road.

  • Sun glare can literally blind a driver. Avoid routes where you drive into the sun and make sure to wear sunglasses to avoid hitting another car or pedestrian.
  • There are more people on the road in spring and summer. Watch weekend traffic for people who are going to the lake or attending a local event or festival. Watch out for reckless drivers who might have overindulged in alcohol.
  • Construction crews get busy again. Have an alternate route to avoid construction. At the very least, slow down and stay alert when you are driving through areas near road work.
  • There will be more motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians sharing the road now that Michigan has warmer weather. You need to give these vehicles and people extra room when passing.
  • More teenagers are out on the roads. Parents who might have been extra cautious about letting their kids drive during winter weather will let these inexperienced drivers get behind the wheel. Teens with a Level 2 license generally have to be off the road by 10 p.m.
  • The spring roads bring potholes and other driving hazards. Make sure to replace your windshield wipers to be able to see more clearly when it rains. Check your tires to make sure your tread is good after driving all winter. Get your engine checked out before warmer temperatures can cause your engine to overheat or have other problems.

 Take care on the roads

When you drive with awareness of the conditions and other drivers, you can reduce your chance of being in an accident. If you are in an accident with serious injuries, you should consider having a personal injury attorney assess your claim before settling with the insurance company.
